Southbury Small Business Spotlight: Sylvia's Colour and Design

Our small business series shines a light on local business owners in the community.

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. And that’s the belief behind this exciting series we’ve kicked off at Patch — to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.

How did you come up with the name?

My Mother opened this salon 15 years ago. The salon name is her first name. When I took the salon over last year I kept the name.

Why start a business in this town?

My mother had been a hairdresser for over 30 years when she opened the salon here in Southbury. Our family has lived in Southbury since the early 70’s. My husband and I are both from Southbury and are now raising our daughter here.

What business are you in?

We are in the beauty industry. We provide color services, hair cuts, styling, and waxing services. We also feature manicure and pedicures in a sanitary environment.

What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?

As a business owner the most difficult challenge I have faced is trying to keep products and services affordable to our community while all of our product and supplies have increased. I need to keep my staff educated on the latest trends and keep high end color and products in our salon.

What’s been your proudest achievement since opening?

My proudest moment since opening is when we give back to the community. My husband and I love this town which is why we moved back. We both went to school here so when we can give back it is great! This year we were able to raise over $1300.00 for the PES playground fund.

How does your business give back to the community?

As stated above we do many benefits to raise money for our community. During the Hurricane a few years ago a lot of people in our community were without power. Our salon provided free wash and blow-drys to people without power. We raised money for the Luck to Tuck Foundation last year. We participate in Locks for Love.
