Strobe Lights Added to Crosswalk in Southbury
The lights have been added to alert drivers on a three-lane road.

Two crossing signs have been installed on Main Street South at Flood Bridge Road, the Republican-American reports.
The double-sided crossing signs have bright yellow strobe lights that flash when someone pushes the button to cross the street. The solar-powered signs are placed on either side of the crosswalk at the intersection where the driveway to the Senior Center and Parks and Recreation Department meets the road.
First Selectman Ed Edelson told the paper he hopes the lights will be enough to get drivers to stop.

According to the paper, the signs cost $10,000 to install and were included in the budget approved by taxpayers in May. There will be minimal electricity costs as the lights are solar-powered.
A tragic accident at the intersection 20-years-ago left an 11-year-old girl dead. After several traffic studies suggested there was no need for a crossing sign, the Board of Selectmen finally concluded last Spring that some sort of action was needed, the paper reports.
