62-Year-Old Man Killed While Aiding Another Motorist On I-84

The man was fatally struck by a car Tuesday while assisting another motorist on Interstate 84 in Southington, state police said.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A 62-year-old man who left his vehicle to help another motorist on Interstate 84 was fatally struck by another car Tuesday evening, state police said.

On Wednesday morning, state police put out a request for witnesses to the collision.

The crash took place at 6:31 p.m. on the eastbound side of the highway, just west of the Exit 28 on-ramp, according to a state police report.

The man, identified by state police as Andy Azib of the Oakville section of Watertown, was on the "travel portion" of the highway's left side, attempting to assist another motorist at a previous crash scene, according to a state police report. He was then hit by a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by a 27-year-old Waterbury man, state police said.

Azib was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead, according to a state police report.

The Nissan was towed from the scene with "disabling damage," according to a state police report.

State police were still investigating the collision Wednesday and asked that any witnesses, particularly those with dashboard cameras, contact Trooper 1st Class John Wilson at 860-534-1098 or at John.wilson@ct.gov.
