SOUTHINGTON, CT — The 2020-21 skiing and snowboarding season is set to begin Friday at Mount Southington.

General Manager Jay Dougherty said last week that enough snow had been made by last weekend to potentially open, buy he did not want crews to spread it out and then potentially lose some of the surface to the rain.

Then the cold temperatures came and that meant a plethora of snowmaking.

Then about a foot of snow dumped on the region Wednesday into Thursday.

"Now we're ready," Dougherty said Thursday.

Dougherty said Mount Southington will operate at a reduced capacity for the 2020-21 season. Priority will be given to those who've purchased season passes, those on race teams, pre-paid groups, or those in other multi-week programs.

Day tickets rentals and lessons will still be available. Dougherty said a new website includes a "more robust e-store" that will allow all products to be sold in advance, thus making it easier for the staff to track and limit capacity for any given day.

On days when the mountain reaches capacity, announcements will be made on the website and on all social media platforms. If the resort has not reached capacity for a given day, products will still be available at the ticket window until capacity is reached, he said.

All transactions will be handled "as touchless as possible," he added.

Masks will be required and social distancing will be practiced, Dougherty said. Sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the base area and chairlift lines have been redesigned to include blank lanes to help distance individuals waiting to load.

Immediate groups and families will ride lifts together.

Singles can ride lifts alone.
