No Fall Fritters On Southington Green ... 1st Time In 50 Years
The apple fritters made famous by a Southington church will not be making appearances on the town green this fall.
SOUTHINGTON, CT — The apple fritters made famous by a Southington church will not be making appearances on the town green this fall for the first time in 50 years.
In a Thursday Facebook post, leaders at the Zion Lutheran Church said the decision was made to fall in line with the Southington Apple Harvest Festival being called off because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Last month, the Southington Town Council Monday voted to call the event off for this year amid coronavirus safety concerns and a lack of direction on what the climate would be like, even as far away as the fall. The 52nd edition of the festival was scheduled for Oct 2 through 4 and Oct. 9 through 11.

Zion Lutheran Church President John Miller said church leaders were surveyed and a metting took place with town officials before the decision was made. Church lewaders fielded several requests to somehow feature the fritters, he said.
"The overwhelming theme of our discussion was a genuine concern for the health and well-being of our members and our faithful customers during these uncertain times of the pandemic," Miller said. "Just know that this decision has left a void for many of us here at Zion. We love the fellowship we share with our members and the community during Apple Harvest time. For us, it's not just about Apple Fritters. It's about a long tradition and a deep connection with the Southington community."

Miller urged residents to rally behind location businesses.
"Our discussions gave us a unique insight into the intense measures that the owners and employees of our local restaurants, bakeries and other food establishments have had to adopt over the past several months to stay in business and serve our community," he said. "It’s overwhelming. Please support them as much as you are able during this difficult time."
