The war in Athens is over. Love blossoms as Procne leaves her beloved sister Philomela for a new life with husband King Tereus. Bored, Philomela begs to see her sister when the unexpected happens and her life is transformed to mythic proportions. Drawing on stories from real life testimonies from 20th century conflict, this empowering revenge tragedy earned Erin Shields the 2010 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play. A powerful drama, examining the horrors of war through a contemporary re-telling of the Greek myth of Philomela.
Vitcavage says, “It has been a pleasure to work with Helene Kvale as her assistant director and dramaturg. As a director, I have learned the power of creating a collaborative process where every input makes its way into the direction of the play. If We Were Birds is one of the most current and important plays written in this decade. It addresses many themes that were once silenced in our society, such as sexual violence, filicide, and the horrors of war. Now, these stories are being heard louder than ever before, and it has been an honor to do my part in sharing them.”
