Twelve Southington Residents Receive Scholarships

Twelve Southington residents were recently awarded scholarships from Main Street Community Foundation totaling $19,972. The 2020 scholarship recipients from Southington are as follows:

• Dave Mongillo Memorial/Golf Scholarship Fund: Max Chubet
• Dr. Joan T. Wallace Prize for Highest Achievement in English at Southington High School: Sarah Meade
• Elizabeth I. and Louis J. Matt Medical Scholarship Fund: Emma Doran and Chloe Grabowski
• Eva Brodowicz Wickwire Volunteer Scholarship Fund: Era Pasha
• KAWFY Memorial Scholarship Fund: Emma Doran, Michaela Hughes, Julia McPherson and Jake Napoli
• Olivia Fusco Memorial Art Scholarship Fund: Francesca Scavone
• Richard A. DellaVecchia Scholarship Fund: Erik Kryzanski
• Robert E. and Angeline P. McCormack Scholarship Fund: Vatsa Sheth
• Southington Observer/StepSaver Scholarship Fund: Chloe Grabowski
• Therese MacCallum "Great Kid" Scholarship Fund: Alexandra Schloesser

This was the inaugural year the KAWFY Memorial Scholarship Fund, which added an additional $6,882 in awards to support Southington residents pursuing their educational goals.

“We are proud to support these students and grateful to the donors whose generosity has made scholarships possible since the Foundation’s establishment 25 years ago,” said Susan Sadecki, President & CEO of Main Street Community Foundation.

This year the Foundation awarded a total of $228,742 in scholarships to 153 students at varying levels of their academic careers. The students – graduating high school seniors, current college students, adults returning to school and elementary and secondary school students – hail from the towns of Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott as well as surrounding communities.

Since 1995, eighty-six scholarship funds have been established or transferred to the Foundation by generous local individuals, families and businesses. Although each scholarship fund has unique criteria, all donors seek to assist students in pursuing their education and career goals; they have a shared belief that helping students ease the financial obligations of education is an investment in the future.

All scholarship recipients are selected through a competitive blind application process. A volunteer committee appointed by the Foundation’s Board of Directors evaluates all applicants.

The Main Street Community Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for both present and future generations in the communities served by encouraging and promoting gift planning, prudent stewardship of assets, effective grantmaking and community leadership. A nonprofit public charity, created by private citizens, the foundation works with donors in Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott who wish to build permanent charitable endowments to support their communities. Since its founding in 1995, the foundation has provided over $19.3 million in grants and scholarships.
