Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Southington

A very stormy middle of the week is forecast and here are the latest details.

The big new news this morning is that it now looks increasingly more likely that Connecticut could receive some “plowable snow” this week. Yes, we’re still dealing with an ice and rain storm in northern Connecticut on Tuesday and early Wednesday, and just plain rain at the coast.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Hartford and Tolland counties from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday as you’ll see periods of freezing rain and snow, which could accumulate less than one inch along with a trace amount of ice, the National Weather Service states. The mixed precipitation is expected to begin Tuesday morning up north and change to plain rain in the afternoon on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties and now says “there is the potential for a winter storm late Wednesday night into Thursday. The potential for plowable snow is increasing and there is the possibility for 6 or more inches.”

The weather service does say the forecast is very volatile for Thursday and adds that it will race through the state if it occurs and be out of the state by Thursday afternoon.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan wrote, “Still a lot of spread and uncertainty with Thursday's follow up storm. Possible scenarios include a near-miss with only light/nuisance snow or a hit with major snow totals. So... we don't know yet. At this point plan on some snow but we need another day to figure this one out.”

As for Tuesday and Wednesday’s storm he added, “For a lot of Connecticut tomorrow's storm is no big deal. In the hills, however, it looks icy. We should see a period of freezing rain resulting in a glaze of ice.”

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Kevin Arnone wrote, “What a roller coaster week! Seasonable today, Wintry mix early Tuesday turning to rain for the afternoon. 50s on Wednesday but snow Thursday.”

Monday: Mostly sunny, high near 40 degrees.

Tuesday: Rain develops in southern Connecticut, beginning after 7 a.m. Up to one inch of rain is possible before it ends early Wednesday morning. Temps rising at the coast to 45 degrees.

In inland areas, mixed precipitation begins early Tuesday but should change to plain rain by noon. Not much accumulation expected. The rain ends by 8 a.m. Wednesday in northern Connecticut.

Wednesday: Partly sunny and temps in the 50s.

Thursday: Snow is more likely now and it ends by 1 p.m. Temps around the freezing mark.
