Help us help our Veterans!

Every veteran who has served our country deserves our gratitude, respect and support.

Do you know a veteran? Perhaps you have a family member who has served, or is currently serving in the military? Perhaps you are a veteran yourself! According to the South Windsor Patriotic Commission, there are 32 South Windsor residents listed who have served or are currently serving in either “Operation Iraqi Freedom,” "Operation Enduring Freedom," and/or “Operation Nobel Eagle” or who are serving elsewhere in the military in support of our country. The South Windsor Post 133 of the American Legion has 196 members, all veterans. The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary’s mission is to support our veterans through sponsoring and participating in many enriching social outreach programs. Advocating for veterans, educating our citizens, mentoring youth, promoting patriotism and good citizenship are key elements in these programs.

The South Windsor American Legion Auxiliary, established most recently in 2017, is an all-volunteer service organization. Members are grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives, and direct and adopted female descendants of American Legion members or deceased veterans who served in the Armed Forces during World Wars I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, and/or Lebanon conflicts, and the Persian Gulf War, and women who are eligible to be a member of the American Legion. In the short span of a year, the Auxiliary has been very active. It has participated in and initiated many programs benefiting veterans and their families and has raised monies to sponsor South Windsor female students to attend Girls’ State. Auxiliary-sponsored outreach programs include: visiting women veterans/spouses at The Village at Buckland Court, helping veterans at bingo games and the Christmas store at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home and Hospital, supplying gift cards to local needy veterans, and selling candy bars at fairs to raise funds.

The next Auxiliary endeavor is to host a fundraiser comedy show! All proceeds will be used to support local veterans and the Auxiliary programs. The show, Funny 4 Funds, showcases 3 comedians, including S. Windsor’s own Dr. Jay Sutay, the self-proclaimed “Hardest Working Pediatrician in Comedy”. He brings his tales from the exam rooms, his experience working with kids and their parents, as well as his own tribulations as the father of two daughters to his standup comedy.
