Picture South Windsor - Then And Now
An old photo and brief story from South Windsor's past, and how that site appears today.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — This week's trip down Memory Lane only goes back a bit over three decades, to the 1989 edition of the South Windsor High School yearbook, The Centurion. Here we find an early photo of the first Subway sandwich shop in town, in a small plaza at 948 Sullivan Ave.
Subway was founded in 1965 in Bridgeport as Pete's Super Submarines; the name was changed to Subway three years later. The chain exploded on the national scene throughout the 1980s, and has become the largest restaurant operator in the world. Subway has more than 41,000 locations in 111 countries worldwide, all independently owned.
In this photo, the shop contains the original Subway logo designed in 1968. The most familiar logo, with italicized lettering, was introduced in 2002; the current company logo has been in place since 2016.

The South Windsor store moved a few doors down into a new building at 1006 Sullivan Ave., next to Batik Salon, around 2011. Its former spot in the plaza is currently occupied by Happy's Nutrition, a smoothie and juice bar.
Here is a more contemporary look at the plaza site, courtesy of Google Maps.
