South Windsor Storm Central [Updated]

Friday morning: Roads are passable and town offices are open as usual.

Residents in need of assistance are advised to call Human Services at (860) 648-6361.

Police are asking residents to stay off the roads unless necessary and to keep pets and children indoors due to the extreme cold. Check on elderly neighbors and relatives.

The first snowstorm 2014 has led South Windsor public schools to close early Thursday and cancelled school for Friday.

The South Windsor Public Library also closed at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The town has a policy of not allowing overnight parking during the winter months and "during a snow or ice storm that has been in progress one hour and continuing for a period of 24 hours after the storm has ended."

According to a message from the town after 2:30 p.m., trash collection remains on schedule for Friday. Residents are asked not  place bins in the roadways. If Friday collection is cancelled, a message will be left on the Town Hall Phone system with the information. Call 860-644-2511 for updates.

According to the South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page, due to the snow storm, all members have been requested to report to their stations for overnight standby starting at 9 p.m.

So far, the storm has dropped several inches on the town (how many are in your yard?) and several more are expected before the storm's end, anticipated by Friday evening.

Meteorologists are predicting the worst of the storm Thursday night into Friday morning.

Gov. Dannel Malloy ordered a partial opening of the state's emergency operations center and directed non-essential employees to leave work early Thursday and to come in late Friday to give plows time to clear the roads.

South Windsor Emergency Operations Coordinator Jay Gonzalez said that officials were reaching out to vulnerable members of the community and that those in need of heat should utilize the warming centers offered in East Hartford. There, the Raymond Library Community Cultural Center at 50 Chapman Place will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to NBC Connecticut. The police lobby of the East Hartford Public Safety Complex, at 31 School St., will not close.
