This Week in South Windsor: Columbus Day, Athletic Fields Vote, Dig Pink

Don't miss two great Bobcats games this week.

Good morning, South Windsor! Happy Columbus Day... I think. If I were my husband, Ted, I might give a dissertation on the holiday but I've really got nothing. Years ago I covered Torrington, where they actually held a parade but mostly it seems like a day off (for some) that's become divorced from any meaning. What do you think? Tell us in the comments.

After today, however, there's a lot going on in town.

Here's what's on my radar:

1. Today is a holiday! To mark the day, town offices and South Windsor schools are closed. Trash and recycling pickup are on schedule, though, including the scrap metal pickup on Wednesday.

2. Tuesday the Town Council will hold a special meeting to vote on a resolution on the Nevers Park Fields Project. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

3. Also Tuesday, the Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. to discuss and hear a presentation on the elementary school facilities plan. Agenda here.

4. Also Tuesday, the Water Pollution Control Association will meet at 7 p.m. in the Madden Room at Town Hall.

5. Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m., South Windsor High football team plays Newington away. The team could use some support and would love to see the fans come out!

6. Also Friday at 4:30 pm., the Lady Bobcats play their annual Dig Pink volleyball game at the South Windsor High School gym. For this special game, players, coaches and family will wear pink t-shirts to honor those who have lost their lives to breast cancer and celebrate the health of survivors and the hope of those fighting. Admission is $4.
