SOUTH WINDSOR, Connecticut – TruNORTH Construction embarked upon 2020 with a sense of optimism and momentum following an extremely successful 2019. However, that energy was soon met by a global pandemic, an unprecedented phenomenon that threatened strategy, profit margins and left many entrepreneurs questioning whether they would be able to keep their doors open.

As many stood by and watched helplessly while businesses closed shop and shut down operations, Co-Owners, Matthew Powers and Jeffrey Sawyer asked themselves, “how can we help?” The power duo has been held in high regard for their craftsmanship but also their approach to philanthropic efforts within the community. “We’re a couple of local guys who have always understood the power of relationships,” says Matt. “We attribute our success to our neighbors and the clients who have empowered us at every phase of our own entrepreneurial journey. We knew that we had to do something, we just didn’t know what.”
When it became clear that COVID-19 was going to wreak havoc, the team started to take inventory of their resources and the needs of their respective communities. Jeff began to lend his expertise to others within the industry, Matt devised a plan to take over as this year’s Sponsor of the Scrooge Scramble and together, they solidified a commitment to Cornerstone Cares in the form of monetary donations, a clothing drive and seasonal visits to help tend to facility needs.

“We felt helpless. The home renovation industry remained steady, but we would check in with folks and learn about scenarios in which they could not make ends meet. We had to operate with our own sense of caution, not knowing where this pandemic was going to take us, but we found ourselves in a position to at the very least lend a helping hand,” adds Jeff.
While the state continues to grapple with the unknown, the TruNORTH Construction team plans to continue helping wherever they can. From organizing giveaways across the company’s social channels on behalf of small businesses to creating a calendar to benefit a non-profit, these seemingly small efforts will likely have a big impact.
When asked what others can do to help, Matt reiterated the criticalness of community at this time. “We are always looking for others to get involved. If you can lend your time, energy, resources, etc. we will not turn you away from the cause. It is going to take a village to empower these business owners to get back on their feet. That’s where we come in.”
