Week Ahead in South Windsor: Open Space Hearing, School Board Discusses Elementary Schools Plan and a Horse Farm

Things not to miss in South Windsor this week.

Good morning, South Windsor. Ted's counter says 71 days left in the year, which means just about two months until Christmas. Yikes. But I will suppress that thought and its accompanying planning until after Halloween.

For today, please note that there is a hearing regarding whether the town should purchase a parcel of open space at 491 King St., South Windsor. The public hearing is planned to allow the public to share their thoughts and opinions on the matter before the council acts on it.

Also on the agenda is an item to schedule a public hearing (proposed for Nov. 18) on the proposed purchase of another piece of land for open space, 559 Avery St.

The purchases would be added to the town ordinance, approved in 2005, in which the town resolved to appropriate funds for open space according to its plan for Conservation and Development. Money for the purchase, over $3 million, was approved at a referendum in 2005, according to minutes of the Open Space Task Force.

Here are five important events in town this week:

The Town Council meets Monday for a work session at 7 p.m. and regular meeting at 8 p.m. A public hearing on the proposed acquisition of open space will be held at 7:15 p.m. Agenda is here.

The South Windsor Board of Education is scheduled to hold its regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. At its last meeting, Superintendent Kate Carter made her recommendation for a three-phase elementary schools facilities plan and said that discussion would continue Tuesday with more details.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall. The agenda is here and includes applications from the South Windsor Farmers Market for a winter market space and from Free Spirit Farm LLC, which wishes to run a horse farm at 112 Pheasant Way and 1080 Avery St.

There will be a presentation at the Wood Memorial Library on Thursday at 7 p.m. about Female Spies of the Civil War. Details here.

On Friday, there will be a Business Networking Group meeting from 7:45 to 9 a.m. at the South Windsor Chamber Office.
