FedEx Employee Stole Firearm: PD

A man stole a revolver while loading a FedEx truck, according to state police.

HARTFORD, CT — A Hartford man was arrested after he stole a black powder revolver while working at a FedEx shipping hub in Willington, according to state police.

Police were contacted on Oct. 27 about a suspicious incident involving a package handler, according to an arrest warrant. The shipping trailers are equipped with cameras that take still images every 30 seconds.

A security officer noticed that Luis Lopez-Cruz, 31, was acting suspiciously while loading packages Oct. 22, according to the warrant. Lopez-Cruz appeared to reach into his left pocket. Another package handler later went into the trailer Lopez-Cruz was loading and found that some items had been removed from packages.

Lopez-Cruz had scanned a package that contained a black powder revolver valued at $509 on Oct. 23, according to the warrant. The package was found ripped open and empty outside the trailer.

Lopez-Cruz left the facility in the middle of his shift and didn’t notify his manager. FedEx terminated him after they weren’t able to reach him.

State police attempted to interview Lopez-Cruz, but weren’t able to contact him, according to the warrant. He is a convicted felon and was wanted on an arrest warrant for a domestic incident.

Lopez-Cruz was arrested Dec. 10 and charged with theft of a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm and fifth-degree larceny. He was held in lieu of $200,000 bail.
