WILLINGTON, CT — The latest Hidden Gem is tucked into a corner along a busy route into northeast Connecticut and/or the state's flagship university.

Welcome to the bell on the Willington Common.

The common itself is located on Willington Hill, near the intersection of Route 74 and Route 320. It's more traveled than one thinks, because the former route is a major link to northeast Connecticut and the latter is an alternate way to the University of Connecticut and the UConn South Campus. The bell is tucked near an historic building at the top of the hill.

The bell sits next to the old meeting hall on the common. Its plaque tells us that, in 1876, it was bought from the First Congregational Church of Stafford for the hefty sum of $140 and was housed in the meeting house belfry.

In 1942, the tower was used as an observation post during World War II.

Its current resting place was dedicated in 1973.
