As we process the tragedy that took place, let us remember what makes Willington a strong and vital community. We are close knit friends and neighbors who are kind, thoughtful, honest and friendly. We answer the call when someone is in need. We stand together through triumph and in tragedy.

Today we are all in need. We are in need of healing, of understanding how this could happen here. We are in need of information and transparency to the greatest degree possible about how and why town leaders and law enforcement handled the situation. We will work together to heal our community and to ensure that we can all feel safe again. We will come together to lift up and embrace the DeMers family along with the other victims of this senseless crime. We will show them what Willington does best, which is to strengthen and support each other--always.

In the coming days I will be engaging with representatives of the Connecticut State Police, local and state leaders to help us understand what took place and how we can better serve our community moving forward. While we may not receive all the answers, we will work diligently to obtain the information we need to allow for decisions that will impact any future situations, and to help residents feel safe. You are encouraged to participate in the conversation by sharing your concerns directly with my office by phone (860) 487-3100 or by email ewiecenski@willingtonct.org.

For now I ask that you remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, look out for each other and stay safe.

Hoping to hear from you,

Erika G. Wiecenski

First Selectman
