Good News Friday: Book Sales and Businesses

This edition of Good News Friday brings you information about some great stuff happening at the town library and Tolland High School.

With the spurt of spring-like weather we had earlier this week, you may have taken a look around your house and thought "Ugh, it's time to clean up this place."

Stacks of gently used books, CDs and DVDs have been sitting in a nice neat pile in the corner of your room, or maybe stashed in the guest room behind a closed door so you don't have to deal with them until it's necessary.

Good news! The Friends of Tolland Public Library want to help you out. Starting now through May 31, you can pack up those baskets of books and CDs and transfer them to the library where they will be used during its annual book sale in June.

I know, it sounds far away and like you have plenty of time, but then again time seems to be flying this year, its nearly St. Patrick's Day... how did that happen?

As Tolland High School athletics continue to dominate on the courts and fields, a new group has shown that it's just adept in a mock-boardroom.

Organizers of the new DECA Club at THS, a group focused on preparing students to become leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management, started the year with the hope that a dozen students would participate. Three-dozen students and a few statewide competition wins later, the club has established itself as a force to be reckoned with.

Over the past few months, DECA students have participated in regional and statewide competitions, earning a few of them a chance to compete at the international level at a competition in Anaheim, CA, in April.

“We have great kids, they’re very well spoken, they’re good at meeting people and introducing themselves, and getting their thoughts across,” club advisor Lynne Bridge said recently.

That's pretty good for being the news kids on the DECA block. Congratulations and best of luck in California!
