Press release from Nathan Hale Homestead:
June 23, 2020
Coventry, Conn. – Join the staff of the Nathan Hale Homestead for a very special virtual version of our beloved Colonial Camp! The virtual camp will take students ages 8-12 on a journey through time to experience how the ten Hale children lived over two hundred years ago.
Through Zoom group lessons, on-demand tutorial videos, and written instructions, students will learn how to plant sunflowers, embroider a pillowcase, capture their likeness in a painted portrait, design a sail boat, write with a quill and ink, and participate in a spy mission – a favorite of returning campers. This unique take on our traditional in-person camp will spark the imagination and inspire creativity in young historians as they are encouraged to envision what life was like in 18th-century Coventry.
Far from your typical online class, the Virtual Colonial Camp provides a week of historical fun with pre-packaged and ready to assemble craft boxes – complete with all the necessary supplies. During this historic moment, students will compare their lives to youth of the past. How are they different, how are they the same? Will you end up in the history books one day?
The Virtual Colonial Camp will be held Monday through Friday, July 20th to 24th. Our virtual camp will meet twice per day via Zoom from 10 – 11 am, and then again from 1 – 2 pm. Admission includes one craft box per camper, access to on-demand how-to craft videos and written instructions, historical fact sheets, two sixty minute Zoom sessions per day with museum staff, and a one year family membership to Connecticut Landmarks.
Extra help sessions will be provided from 11 – 11:30 am and 2 – 2:30 pm by appointment. Registration required as space is limited; please reserve your spot by July 6th. For more information and to register, contact hale@ctlandmarks.org or visit www.ctlandmarks.org/camps. Our Virtual Colonial Camp is designed for ages 8 to 12. Cost is $175 per camper; sibling discount and limited scholarships available.
About the Nathan Hale Homestead
Nathan Hale Homestead is the birthplace of Connecticut’s State Hero, Nathan Hale, who was hanged as a spy during the Revolutionary War. The house, built in 1776, belonged to Nathan’s parents and family, and is located on the only site he ever called home. Its furnishings include several Hale family possessions and other collections amassed by Connecticut lawyer and philanthropist George Dudley Seymour, who purchased the Homestead in 1914 and began a program of restoration that is largely preserved today. The Hale Homestead is situated on 17 acres, adjoining the 1500-acre Nathan Hale State Forest, lending to the site’s substantial rural character.
