TIS Students Keep Tolland History Alive [Video]

For one day each year when the weather gets a bit warmer, motorists passing by the Tolland Green catch a glimpse of what it may have looked like in the mid-1800s when students left the confines of their one-room schoolhouse and had lessons outdoors.

Dozens of Tolland Intermediate School third grade students dressed in period clothing and carrying baskets for lunch boxes walked from station to station Thursday to experience what it might have been like to live during this historic time in their town.

From learning a reel and sketching architecture, to practicing their penmanship and mastering proper classroom manners, the TIS students played the roles of good students throughout the day.

For several months, the students study various aspects of Tolland history, including some of the families and children who once lived here, to prepare for their day on the Tolland Green.

In addition to time spent on the actual Green, the students also tour the Hick-Stearns Family Museum, the Old Tolland County Jail & Museum and sit in a mock one-room schoolhouse in the basement of the United Congregational Church of Tolland.
