Tolland Students Honor the American Flag
Four essays by students from the Tolland Public School system were chosen as this year's award recipients in the annual Memorial Day Essay Contest.
The Tolland Permanent Celebration Committee is pleased to announce the winners of its annual Memorial Day Essay Contest.
The winners are:
- third grader Mary Singer;
- sixth-grader Maxwell Fenner;
- seventh-grader Stephanie Lewis;
- and Amanda Danielson, a junior at Tolland High School.
The winners, who wrote about how they honor the American flag, will receive Barnes & Noble gift cards and will be recognized at the Memorial Day Service on May 27 at the Tolland Intermediate School immediately following the 21st annual Tolland Memorial Day Parade. The parade, with the theme of “Honoring Our Flag,” begins at 1 p.m. next to the Preschool of the Arts on Tolland Stage Road, travels past the town green and ends at the school on Old Post Road.
Amanda will also be one of two Tolland High singers performing at the service. The other is senior Kelsey Kaplan. The Tolland High band, under the direction of Megan Kirwin, will also perform as will buglers David Derro and Karl Grulke.

The committee was quite impressed with the number of essay contest participants this year and thanks all for entering.
