
Westport Assessor Paul Friia today reminded residents that the Assessor’s Office and the Human Services Department are continuing to take applications for the state and local tax relief programs.
The programs are open to homeowners who are totally disabled or who have reached the age of 65 by the date of application.
Application deadlines for the programs are:
Town credit Wednesday, May 15
State credit Wednesday, May 15
Town add’l vets Tuesday, October 1
Town sewer deferral Friday, November 15
Town real estate deferral Friday, December 27
Qualified applicants for the state program are those who own their homes or hold a “life use” title to their home, have resided in Connecticut for one year prior to filing application, and whose qualifying income does not exceed $33,500 for single, or $40,900 for married couples.
Westport’s local program provides qualified homeowners either a tax credit with a maximum income level of $55,000 and/or a tax deferral with a maximum income level of $75,000. Qualified homeowners with incomes of $75,000-$100,000 are able to defer tax increase from the previous year only.
The local veteran’s program offers $20,000 off of the assessment. This is also based on qualifying income not to exceed $58,500 for single and $65,900 for married.
To be eligible for this program, veteran discharge papers must be recorded with the Town Clerk. Residents should contact the Assessor’s Office at (203) 341-1070 or Human Services at (203) 341-1050 for additional information. All applications will be taken by appointment only.
