Burglar Caught Who Stole $4,000 Worth of Items from Westport Home: Cops

The theft was reported in October 2015.

WESTPORT, CT — A 58-year-old New Haven man was arrested on a warrant on burglary and larceny charges last week in connection with an October 2015 theft of a Main Street home where $4,000 worth of items were stolen, according to Westport police.

Sherman Miles was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny in connection with the theft, in which he is alleged to have taken electronics and jewelry.

Police said Miles broke into the home during the day by smashing a window, and he allegedly sold the items at a Stratford pawn shop soon after.

"[Westport Police] Detective George Taylor positively identified Miles through the pawn shop video surveillance as well as his identification given at the sale," police wrote in a statement.

Miles, who used to frequent the Gillespie Center, which is Westport's homeless shelter, the Westport Public Library and other locations in town, was spotted by Det. Taylor walking towards the homeless shelter on Jesup Road when he arrested him.

Miles was held in lieu of a $175,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Aug. 12.
