COPS: Westport Man Burglarized Home While Residents Slept

The alleged suspect went back to the home to return a purse that he had stolen, which is how detectives connected him with the burglary.

A local man reportedly burglarized a Westport home while the residents slept on the second floor. When police caught the suspect, they found narcotics in the “getaway” car, according to an arrest report.

Westport police responded to Hideaway Lane at about 7 a.m. after the homeowners reported the burglary. The house number was not specified in the police report.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Nicholas Thomas, of 43 Drumlin Road, Westport, reportedly entered the house overnight through an unlocked door. Thomas went through drawers on the first floor while the residents of the home were upstairs asleep, according to the arrest report.

The homeowner told detectives that a purse taken in the burglary was returned to the house by a man, later identified as Thomas, who told them he witnessed another man drop the purse on Hales Road near Hillspoint Road, police said.

Westport police officers located Thomas and detectives were able to connect evidence of the burglary directly to him, disproving the story that he was a witness, police said.

Thomas then gave a full confession to the burglary. He was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters. Westport police charged Thomas with second-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny, four counts of third-degree forgery and possession of narcotics, police said.

Thomas was issued a $20,000 bond. He is due in court May 7.
