Get Rid of Hazardous Waste in Westport This Weekend
Annual collection day scheduled for Saturday. Find out what you can and can't dispose of.

Westport will host its annual household hazardous waste collection day this weekend.
The collection will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Westport-Weston Health District, 180 Bayberry Lane, Westport, according to Public Works Director Stephen Edwards
“This is an opportunity for residents to clean out their basements and garages of general hazardous materials,” said Edwards.

Edwards categorized the areas of a household and the types of typical chemicals that may be found:
Garage: degreasers, gasoline, kerosene, mineral spirits, oil-based paints, paint strippers, paint thinners, solvents, stains, turpentine, varnishes, wood preservatives, etc.

Garden shed: fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, etc
General household: bleach, charcoal lighter, cleaning chemicals, drain cleaners, fish chemicals, flammable liquids, mercury thermometers, moth balls, pet flea shampoos, photo chemicals, rug shampoos, spot removers, etc.
Edwards added several items including antifreeze, motor oil, batteries of any type, fluorescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs, smoke detectors, and electronics, can be recycled at the transfer station on the Sherwood Island Connector during normal operating hours
Ammunition, flares and commercial hazardous waste will not be accepted.
