Staples Girls’ Golf Open Season with Victories

Varsity and JV kick off with wins over Darien.

Staples Girls' Golf Varsity & JV teams prevailed over Darien in cold winds at Longshore Golf Course in the season opener for both programs on Thursday afternoon. The Varsity posted a 200-214 victory from the white tees while the JV registered 255-272 from the yellow tees.

"Considering not one player in the Varsity match played Varsity in previous seasons, and 4 of the 6 players had no match experience, this is a very satisfying way to start the season," said Head Coach Patty Kondub.

Staples' junior Leni Lemcke was the medalist with a 46. "Today's conditions made for a really tough round, but I think we held tough and learned a lot from the windy weather," opined the Wreckers' number one golfer.

Supporting Lemcke were Keeva Boyle and Kathleen Coffey each with 50, and Reilly McGeehan carding a 54. McGeehan made Wrecker history when her second shot on hole 4 landed in a tree and didn't drop, a la Rory McIlroy in 2012 at KIawah. "I will make sure to never do that again", chuckled the sophomore, who ended up taking a one-stroke penalty for an unplayable lie.

Co-Captain Linnea Jagenberg and sophomore Ellery Vishno rounded out the starting lineup.

Leading the JV with a 51 was junior Elle Laub. The JV squad posting the win consisted of junior Amanda Green, and newcomers to the golf team Lila Botur, Erin Odale, Basha Perkins and Cammie Rubino.

"The girls from both schools were tough and committed playing in frigid windy conditions," Coach Liz Fry said after the final score was reported at 6:20PM.

Next up for the Wreckers are back-to-back home matches Monday (Greenwich) and Tuesday (St. Joes). Thursday the Wreckers travel to Ridgefield.
