Staples Girls Golf Qualifies for FCIAC Championships

Clutch victory vaults 4th-ranked Staples into County and State Championship tournaments.

It came down to the last match of the season for Staples Girls Golf to guarantee a spot in the FCIAC playoffs, even though they are ranked number four in the state.

“I am so proud of my team that we were able to beat St. Joseph at their home course. Our team has worked so hard to make it to FCIACs and through an unusual season,” Senior CoCaptain Linnea Jagenberg said after the 11-stroke victory at Tashua Knolls on Thursday, May 27.

Medalist for the Wreckers for the 14th time (out of 15 played matches) was Junior sensation Leni Lemcke with a 43. A week prior Staples lost a key match to Ludlowe while Lemcke and number 2 Lizzie Keuhndorf had AP exams. Lemcke decided to reschedule her exam which was on Thursday. The squad, playing without Keuhndorf and Wrecker Keeva Boyle (whose score has been used in 10/11 matches played) rallied behind Lemcke with solid scores: freshman Kathleen Coffey registered a 45, CoCaptain Merin McCallum a 50, and Jagenberg a 51. Subbing at the last moment was sophomore Ellery Vishno (49) and Reilly McGeehan.

“We knew the pressure going into this match. The tension was there but we pulled through as a team and can’t wait for FCIACs,” said Lemcke.

FCIAC Championships are Thursday June 3 at Fairchild Wheeler. The last time Staples were the champs was in 2016. The team finished with an FCIAC record of 7-3, overall season record 12-4.

The JV finished with a win, too. Wrecker medalist (45) freshman Erin Odale lead the way on The Glen Executive Course at Tashua. Fellow freshman Cammie Rubino and Sophomores Sienna Peck and Basha Perkins brought home the Wreckers victory 212-249.

“The future looks bright for Staples Girls Golf—and I’m talking about the immediate post-season play,” were the final words from Head Coach Patty Kondub.
