Staples Girls Golf Stands 8-2 as FCIAC Season Heats Up

Team is ranked third in the State with two weeks to go.

It was a long ride home from Greenwich for the Staples Girls Golf Team after it fell to West Division rival 194-186 at “The Griff” Golf Course on Thursday, May 13.

The loss put a damper on Wrecker Leni Lemcke’s career-low round of 38, which is one over par for “The Griff”. Cardinal Caroline McShea, who was paired at number one with Lemcke, was red hot as well, and sunk a 20-foot putt on the final hole to shoot even par.

“It was so much fun playing with Caroline because every shot the leader would change, and by the 9th hole we were even, both with 20-foot putts. She had an amazing putt for birdie and definitely deserved to win after that,” said the Staples junior.

Both players should receive extra kudos as it was the first time either golfer had played a match on this golf course. Lemcke never even had a practice round.

To be noted Greenwich earned its revenge of losing earlier in the season to Staples by 20 strokes at Longshore, the largest margin in memory.

It was the fourth match in four days for The Wreckers, and you could say the team out of gas. Its schedule was shuffled due to course closures during storms the previous week. Previous victories for the week were over Danbury on Senior Day (188-254) and Ridgefield home (190-194) & away (200-213).

The JV squad was successful over Ridgefield away. Elle Laub was medalist for the Wreckers with a 53. Unfortunately the JV had to postpone a couple home matches due to the boys Varsity needing tee times for matches at Longshore, and Danbury had no JV squad. This coming fall boys golf will be played September-November, and thus no conflicts are expected in 2022.

The Varsity Wreckers host Trumbull on May 18, then take the short trip to Smith Richardson vs. Ludlowe May 19, and Warde May 20. JV is away May 18 at the Par 3 in Fairfield.
