Attorney Barry Morgan Examines Safety Hazards of E-Cigarettes
Attorney Barry Morgan, of the Morgan Law Office P.A., lists the top two tips for consumers regarding the dangers of e-cigarettes.
Personal injury attorney Barry Morgan, founder of the Morgan Law Office P.A., is bringing to light the spate of recent accidents involving e-cigarettes, by discussing the potential dangers of the product. “After 35 years of handling personal injury and wrongful death cases I am still sometimes startled by the bizarre circumstances of some accidental injuries,” said Morgan. “Once in awhile I am faced with an accident that is frightening, in that it is caused by unappreciated but significant risk inherent in a common and apparently innocuous product.”
To educate consumers about the risks and dangers of e-cigarettes, Morgan shares the following two tips:
No. 1: Lithium ion batteries. “Similar to certain cell phones that all airline passengers must now avoid, e-cigarettes are powered with lithium ion batteries, which have repeatedly been catching on fire,” said Morgan.
“The more common fires occur when the batteries are being charged, yet have also occurred spontaneously, oftentimes while the consumer has them in a pant or shirt pocket.”

No. 2: Fire or explosion. The inherent problem is that lithium can be unstable when heated. If there is a short circuit in the battery the resulting heat can trigger a very hot fire or explosion. “Fires caused by e-cigarette explosions are not minor smoldering or heat emissions; they are more akin to an out-of-control blowtorch,” noted Morgan. “The injuries are often full-thickness burns that result in skin grafts and lifelong disfigurement.”
Manufacturers have worked on various methods to eliminate these fires, but small imperfections in the manufacturing process can result in catastrophic failures. “Apparently, a fail-safe method of manufacture seems out of reach so far,” concluded Morgan.
