BRANDON, FL — A community tradition that dates back to 1959, the Brandon Fourth of July parade, one of the largest Independence Day parades in Florida, will kick off at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 4.

With a 50/50 chance of rain and the unpredictability of weather in Florida in July, to be on the safe side, you'd better bring an umbrella if you're heading out to celebrate. Patch will provide update on any severe thunderstorms and event cancellations.

Barring rain, the community will celebrate with marching bands, floats, krewes, veterans groups, dancing troupes and a motorcade of Hillsborough County sheriff's vehicles and fire trucks.

The parade gets underway at 10 a.m. at 101 E Lumsden Road and proceeds up Parsons Avenue to Robertson Street. It continues west on Robertson Street, ending at Buckingham Place. The reviewing stand will be on Parsons Avenue just before Oakfield Drive.

The Community Roundtable, which organizes the annual parade, advises spectators to arrive early to get prime spots in the shade, bring folding chairs, sunscreen, sunglasses and water. There will be vendors selling water and other beverages along the parade route.

Throughout June leading up to the parade, the nonprofit Community Roundtable also hosts the Honorary Mayor of Brandon fundraising election.

This year's candidates are Angie Kagey and Donelle White. The candidate raising the most dollars for Brandon area charities and the roundtable from June 1 to July 4 is named honorary mayor of Brandon and takes an honored place riding in a convertible in the parade.

For information on the candidates' fundraisers, visit the roundtable's website.
