BRANDON, FL — A man who killed his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend out of jealousy on Dec. 5, 2019, has been sentenced to life in prison, plus 50 years, after he was found guilty by a Tampa jury Friday.

Robert Beausejour, Jr., 40, made threats to the victim through text messages leading up to the murder, the Hillsborough State Attorney's Office said. He was angry because the victim was dating his ex-girlfriend. Beausejour made a statement through a text that said, "had one for" the victim—referring to a bullet, law enforcement officials said.

On the day of the murder, Beausejour went to the victim's home in Tampa, investigators said. He looked inside a bedroom window and saw his ex and her boyfriend in bed together. This put him into a jealous rage, and he tried to kick in a door, according to authorities. He challenged the victim to come outside, and continued to try and break inside the home. As the ex-girlfriend hid inside the bedroom, the victim went to check the security of the door, and was killed when Beausejour shot him, who also managed to break inside. Beausejour grabbed his ex-girlfriend's cell phone tried to make her leave with him. He left after she refused to leave. Deputies eventually found Beausejour and arrested him.

Assistant State Attorneys Lindsey Hodges and Megan Newcomb prosecuted the case. A jury found Beausejour guilty of premeditated first-degree murder with a firearm and armed burglary of a dwelling with assault or battery.

Following the guilty verdicts, Judge Samantha Ward sentenced Beausejour to life in prison for the charge of murder, as well as 50 years in prison for the burglary charge. The sentences will be served concurrently.

“This outcome delivers justice for this victim, his family, and our community," Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said. "While we know this sentence can’t bring back the person they loved, they and the public can rest assured that the man who murdered him will be facing the consequences, inside a prison cell, for the rest of his life."
