Heat Exhaustion Versus Heat Stroke

  • From Tampa General Hospital —  Do you know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke? Heat exhaustion, if untreated, can cause heat stroke which occurs when your body reaches an internal temperature of 104 degrees. Heat stroke is much more dangerous than heat exhaustion. It can cause damage to your organs and your brain. In extreme cases, it can even kill. Symptoms of heat stroke include high fever (104 or higher), severe headache, dizziness and light-headedness, a flushed or red appearance, lack of sweating, muscle weakness or cramps, nausea, vomiting, fast heartbeat, fast breathing, feeling confused, disoriented or anxious, and seizures. Heat stroke is a serious condition that shouldn't be ignored. Pay attention when you're in the heat or during strenuous exercise. Keep your body cool by wearing appropriate clothing and drinking plenty of fluids.
