1 Dead, 2 Injured In Shooting After Florida HS Football Game

A shooting broke out after a high school football game as the crowd was leaving the stadium in Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE, FL — One person was killed and two students were injured in a shooting that happened after a high school football game in Jacksonville Friday night, according to the sheriff's office. The victim, a 19-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting happened on a sidewalk between the football stadium and the Raines High School entrance around 10 p.m. According to the sheriff's office, the shooting happened as the crowd was leaving the game between Raines and Lee high schools.

Responding officers found three victims, including a teenage boy and a teenage girl who were injured in the shooting. The teenage boy, 17, is a student at Raines High School who officials say was a direct target of the shooting. The teenage girl, 16, who was injured is a student at Lee High School and was hit by a stray bullet, officials said. Both victims are expected to survive their injuries.

The victim who was killed died at the scene was also a direct target of the shooting, authorities said. He was identified as 19-year-old Joerod Jamel Adams. Sheriff's officials say an investigation revealed that the male victims had ties to known criminal street gang members.

Sheriff's officials said there were disturbances and fights during the game as it was winding down and they will be investigating whether that factored into the shooting.

The Duval County Public Schools said in a statement that a meeting will be held Saturday "to analyze what happened and to determine if further safety precautions need to be taken at future games or events to deter potential incidents of violence."

Counseling support teams will be on both school campuses Monday to help students.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry issued a statement about the shooting Saturday, saying it was caused by "gang violence."
