Man Accused Of Killing Girlfriend On Board Carnival Cruise

The Kansas man is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of a 53-year-old woman that happened in January, the DOJ said.

A Kansas man has been charged after federal prosecutors say he killed his girlfriend on board a cruise ship in January. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Kansas, Eric Newman, 53, made an initial appearance on the indictment charging him with murder on Thursday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Newman is charged with second-degree murder. According to the indictment, the killing happened on board the Carnival Elation, a cruise ship that departs from and returns to Jacksonville.

Newman is accused of killing Tamara Tucker, 50, of Lawson, Missouri, according to the indictment. Court filings show Newman was arrested on Sept.6.

According to The Kansas City Star, Carnival said in a statement that the woman died after falling from her balcony to several decks below. The cruise departed Jan. 18 on a four-day cruise. The indictment alleges Tucker was killed on or about Jan. 19.

An obituary showed Tucker was killed two days after her 50th birthday, the Star reported.

A detention hearing for Newman is scheduled for Sept. 12.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Jacksonville Field Office with the assistance of the FBI Topeka Field Office.
