Relay for Life of Lutz Needs Volunteers, Teams

An interest party will be held Feb. 11.

Planning is under way for the Relay for Life of Lutz, and organizers hope the community will get involved in a variety of ways.

The event, which benefits the American Cancer Society, will take place May 18 at Steinbrenner High. But there's a lot that goes into planning the night of walking, reflection and fellowship before that happens.

Adults and students alike are welcome to join the cause, either as committee members or as members of relay teams, said Samantha Lauf of the American Cancer Society Florida Division.

Service hours are available for volunteers, and committee members can choose the types of activities they would like to be involved in, Lauf said.

"We have all different positions available," she said. "Planning committee members attend monthly and sometimes twice monthly meetings where we talk about the logistics and marketing of the event."

Some of the positions are more hands-on, and others have less responsibility, with hours committed to the cause ranging from one to four per week, Lauf said.

For those who would like to participate in the relay, you can join an existing team or form your own team. Teams have between 10 and 15 members, Lauf said. There is a $100 registration fee per team, and a fundraising goal of $1,500 per team, Lauf said.

There is no mandatory fundraising requirement, however, Lauf said.

Teams are coached on raising money and hold fundraisers leading up the event, Lauf said. There is plenty of support and guidance along the way to help teams reach their fundraising goals.

Individuals also are welcome to serve on the planning committee and participate on a team, she said.

Anyone interested in learning more about getting involved is encouraged to attend, Lauf said.
