WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — Leanna Cartagena of Wesley Chapel and dental assistant student at Concorde Career Institute-Tampa campus has been awarded the Pacific Dental Services Foundation’s Dr. Carolyn Ghazal Dental Assistant Scholarship.

The scholarship's purpose is to help shape the next generation of dental assistant leaders by providing students with need-based financial aid, mentorship and on-the-job training. It is named after Dr. Carolyn Ghazal, DDS, who is chairwoman of associate dentist development at PDS University-Institute of Dentistry. The scholarship originated with Concorde Career Colleges Inc. – a national leader in health care education with 16 campuses in eight states – and now is available to students at several schools across the nation.

The scholarship is awarded four times per year and this time received more than 50 applicants. Each winner will receive up to $5,000 in financial aid and be assigned a mentor to assist during and after completing their dental assistant program as well as on-the-job training.

“The scholarship provides students with financial support and mentorship as they pursue a career in dental assisting,” said Ghazal. “My hope is that it will make a significant impact in the life of a DA student and foster their professional and personal development.”
