2-Headed Calf Born on Florida Farm

A Baker County dairy farmer got quite a shock when he inspected a newborn calf in his field on Sunday. The newborn had two heads instead of one.

Bottle-fed since she is not yet strong enough to stand on her own, the calf is drawing quite a bit of attention. “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” has already been in touch with Dwight Crews and his family, WTOC reported.

Two-headed calves are extremely rare, but not unheard of, the station pointed out. The longest-living two-headed calf survived about 40 days.

The female calf has two sets of eyes, two faces and two mouths, Click Orlando reported.

Crews explained his surprise at finding the unusual baby to the station, saying he couldn’t believe it. “I’ve heard of them, but I’ve never seen one. This is my first.”

While the future is unclear for the calf, since named Annabel, Crews and his family are doing what they can to help her thrive.

“I would like to see her live, and see her get up and walk and function,” he told Click Orlando.

In October 2013, a two-headed calf was born on a farm in Vermont. That calf only survived two days, WPTZ reported. Also a female, she died of natural causes. Veterinarians in that case explained the abnormality by saying the calf was supposed to be a twin but “the egg inside the mother failed to split.”
