DOMA Ruled Unconstitutional, New Port Richey Reacts on Gay Marriage
DOMA is the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states.

The Defense of Marriage Act has been ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. DOMA is the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states.Â
There was a 5-4 vote in the decision.
“DOMA divests married same-sex couples of the duties and responsibilities that are an essential part of married life,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the majority, according to the Miami Herald.
Although same-sex marriages are not recognized under Florida law, several cities — including St. Petersburg, Tampa, Clearwater, Sarasota — as well as Pinellas County have passed domestic partnership registries that allow couples, gay or straight, certain rights in health care and other decisions.
Pasco and Hillsborough counties do not have a domestic partner registry.
Readers on New Port Richey Facebook Page shared their views on the topic. Here's what they had to say:
Andrea Longabardi-Morrow wrote: "Equal rights! It seems odd that's even a question.. we fought this backwards battle with women's rights and racism. Why can't we learn from our past mistakes. We are all human. Everyone should be entitled to love and respect. I hope one day this won't even be an issue. For people that say it doesn't affect me, it does. You may a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, friend ...someone in the future this would apply to. I am not same sex oriented, it should'by matter . I fight for equal rights."
Jim Duffy wrote: "I am not for gay marraige, meaning that it is not for me. With that being said, I firmly believe that everyone has a right to be happy. If your happiness includes marrying someone of the same sex, then do what makes you happy. I don't think others should stand in your way. As for the people that argue that it's against Gods will, ask them who they are to judge. Live life and be happy..."
Amanda Taylor wrote: "True mariage is between Man and Women only what's wrong with this world."
