Hottest Trend: 'Binge-Watching Baby Names' With Netflix Effect

"House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black" and other TV shows are among the biggest inspirations for baby names this year.

No “Spoilers,” but there are a lot of little Franks and Claires in cradles this year.

BabyCenter released its Hottest Baby Names of 2014 report this week, revealing the most prevalent baby naming trend of this year - the “Netflix Effect.”

A survey conducted by BabyCenter found that nearly 20 percent of new mothers were inspired by television characters and 16 percent drew inspiration from celebrity names. According to BabyCenter’s Editor-In-Chief Linda Murray, 2014 is the year of the “binge-watching baby name.”

  • “House of Cards” first couple Frank and Claire rose 19 and 14 percent, respectively. Other character names that rose in popularity include Garrett (up 16 percent), Zoe (up 13 percent), Remy (up 11 percent), and Francis (up 5 percent).
  • “Orange is the New Black” character Galina (nicknamed “Red”) was the most popular baby name fromt the show, rising 67 percent. Other character names on the rise include Nicky (up 35 percent), Piper (up 28 percent), Larry (up 28 percent), and Dayanara (up 19 percent).
  • Parents also drew inspiration from ABC’s “Nashville” and Shonda Rhimes hits including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How to Get Away with Murder.”
  • Disney phenomenon “Frozen” boosted baby names Elsa (up 29 percent) and Hans (up 19 percent) while the name Kristen (as in Kristen Bell, who voiced the character Anna) rose 22 percent. Unexpectedly, the “summer-loving snowman” Olaf plummeted 310 percent.

Other trends include the name Jeter, which increased 82 percent following the announcement of famed baseball player Derek Jeter’s retirement. The name Derek also rose 4 percent.
