Library Hopes to Grow Seed Exchange

People can now check seeds for plants out of the New Port Richey Public Library, in addition to books.

Libraries are often considered places where people can tap resources to help their minds grow.

The New Port Richey Public Library is trying out a new free seed exchange program that might be fertile ground for helping gardens grow.

The seed exchange program is a free service where people with a New Port Richey Public library card can check out  seeds grown free of chemicals just as they’re able to borrow books. From vegetables to flowers, borrowers can find drawers of seeds that will allow them to cultivate their own local gardens. The hope is that growers will lend seeds in return to help others with their gardens

The seeds are located in a set of drawers near the library’s periodical racks. Inside the drawers, seeds are organized in alphabetical order. One drawer contains seeds that are “Easy” to grow. Another marked “medium”  contains that are insect-pollinated or biennial and are likely to cross-pollinate. The “Advanced” drawer contains seeds that are pollinated by wind or insects and are very likely to cross-pollinate.

The types of seeds are also listed in the library catalog.  To check out packets, take them to the circulation desk.

The seeds came from a number of sources. The Suncoast Co-Op, which specializes in  locally grown or prepared organic food, requested a good deal on behalf of the library.  The city’s Environmental Committee had a big hand in advocating fror the program.

People wanting to contribute seeds to the  change can bring them

The seed exchange was celebrated in a ceremony Aug. 20. Also celebrated was the city’s new community garden program. This gives locals a chance to grow community gardens on property, including vacant lots in the city. People who want to do that can fill out a form at the city clerk’s office, 59198 Main Street, New Port Richey.

Watch our video of the Library  Outreach Director Ann Scott explain the seed exchange.

Visit the library at 5939 Main St  New Port Richey, to take advantage of the seed  program.
