On April 6 the Volunteer Way celebrated its 25th Anniversary at the Spartan Manor with 300 of its closest friends. During the festivities Tax Collector Mike Fasano presented Lester Cypher, CEO of The Volunteer Way with a ceremonial check totaling $5,205.34. The funds were raised in December, 2016 through the generosity of a very giving community. These funds are used to help offset the cost of Fasano’s annual Farm Share Holiday Food Giveaway.
The 2016 giveaway provided a complete holiday meal for 550 families. The items included fresh ham, potatoes, canned vegetables, breads, desserts, candy canes and miscellaneous other food items. Funds raised include donations by local business, the community and others interested in ensuring that the hungry and homeless have enough food to eat during the holiday season. The 2017 food giveaway will be held in December.
“It was a blessing to see so many people come out to honor Lester Cypher and the good work he, Martha O’Brien and all of the staff at the Volunteer Way do each and every day,” comments Greg Giordano, Chairman of the Volunteer Way’s Board of Directors. “It has been incredible seeing The Volunteer Way grow from its humble beginnings handing food out of one church to the presence it has partnering with 80 or more ministries all throughout Pasco County.”

Fasano, who hoisted the ceremonial check high during the presentation, has a long history showing his support for The Volunteer Way in very tangible ways. During his tenure as a lawmaker in Tallahassee Fasano shepherded through the state appropriations process the funds needed to secure a large refrigerated truck. The truck allows for the pickup and delivery of perishables. It can be seen traveling local streets and has become a symbol of The Volunteer Way.
“Lester Cypher is an individual who has chosen to spend his life helping those who need a hand up,” states Fasano. “He wants people to have the chance to get back on their feet, learn a trade or some other skill and become self-sufficient. Lester has a heart of gold and would do anything to help someone in need. At the same time he does not want people to continue living in poverty. The Volunteer Way was created and has been successful, in helping break that cycle for countless people.”
