Pasco County Opens Shelter for Residents Seeking to Leave Ahead of Hurricane

The shelter opens Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.

Pasco County is opening a hurricane shelter for residents who would like to leave their home ahead of Hurricane Matthew. Wiregrass Ranch High School will open Thursday, October 6 at 7 p.m.giving residents a place to ride out the storm.* Wiregrass Ranch High School, 2909 Mansfield Blvd., Wesley ChapelCitizens should first attempt to find shelter with neighbors, relatives or friends. If that is not an option, citizens can self-evacuate directly to the shelter. Pasco County will provide transportation for residents who need assistance getting to a shelter if they call Pasco County Customer Service at 727-847-2411. Lines will be answered through 9 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. Friday. Please note that food will not be available at the shelter Thursday evening.

The first meal served to shelter residents will be breakfast Friday morning.Citizens planning to arrive at the shelter Thursday evening are asked to eat before they arrive.The shelter will be open to anyone with special needs and to families with pets. (Pet owners are responsible for taking care of and providing food for their animals.)Citizens are encouraged to visit the county website for updates onHurricane Matthew and for the latest actions Pasco County is taking.Citizens are also encouraged to visit the Pasco County Emergency Management website for more information about preparing for hurricanes or other disasters.
