Dog Left Inside Car In 93-Degree Heat In Town Brookhaven

A cruelty to animals citation was just one of many calls handled in recent weeks by Brookhaven police.

BROOKHAVEN, GA — The owner of a dog left inside a car during a 93-degree afternoon was cited for animal cruelty last week. The incident happened August 15, when the dog was left inside the car for at least 10 minutes while the owner was shopping in Town Brookhaven. Police said the owner was issued a state of Georgia citation for cruelty to animals.

That call was only one of more than 1,971 calls answered by Brookhaven police from Aug. 12-18. Those calls resulted in 130 incident reports, 98 citations, and 29 arrests. Here is a sampling:

Monday, August 12 – Commercial burglary, 3300 block of Buford Highway. Police were dispatched to a retail store at the request of the manager, who said the store's alarm was going off when she arrived. She also discovered an auxiliary side door was unlocked and open. When she approached the registers, she saw that the safe was opened and some cash was laying on the floor. Officers found no signs of forced entry to the store or to the safe. The manager reviewed the store’s surveillance video and it showed a subject entering from the side door wearing dark pants, camouflaged jacket with a hood and green gloves. The subject went directly to the safe that looked unsecured, pulled open the door and began stuffing items into his pocket. He left via the side door. At this time, it’s undetermined how much money was taken from the safe.

Tuesday, August 13 – Battery, 2000 block of N. Druid Hills Road. Police responded to a man and woman arguing in the street. The officers met with the couple and who admitted they were arguing most of the day about ownership of their dog. The man had injuries to his right thumb and left forearm that both admitted were inflicted by the female. She was taken into custody and during the search, officers found methamphetamines. She was taken to the DeKalb jail.

Wednesday, August 14 – Loitering and prowling, 300 block of Town Boulevard. Police responded to a report of a male wandering the property “jiggling” apartment door handles. Officers searched the area but did not locate the suspect. They later received another call of a male matching the same description sleeping in the parking garage. He was located but could not provide a reasonable explanation for being there. The suspect was taken to the DeKalb jail.

Wednesday, August 14 – Disorderly conduct, 900 block of Lincoln Court Avenue. Police responded to a complaint of shots fired at the complainant’s door. The caller said her neighbor was shooting at her door but officers discovered her neighbor instead setting off firecrackers in front of the complainants door. Officers arrested the suspect and took him to the DeKalb jail.

Thursday, August 15 – Entering auto, 2200 block of Lake Boulevard. The victim told police she parked her car in the morning and when leaving for lunch around noon, discovered her driver front window smashed in. Security cameras showed a silver Honda backing into the nearby handicap spot. A female and male then roamed through the parking garage. The female then moved the car in front of the three victim’s cars. The male then entered the cars. The suspect’s car then left, and when it did the license plate was visible to the security camera.

Thursday, August 15 – Wanted person located, 2900 block of Buford Highway. Police received a license plate reader alert on a stolen 2018 White Kia, on N. Druid Hills heading toward I-85. The vehicle was stolen from Hertz Rental Car. The vehicle was stopped in front of police headquarters. The subject had a warrant from College Park and was taken to jail.

Friday, August 16 – Simple battery, 100 block of Glen Way. A female victim was walking down the stairs and her purse struck another female who was sitting at the bottom of the stairs. The suspect stared at the victim as the victim apologized. The suspect then threw a cup of hot noodles at the victim. The victim wasn't injured and refused medical treatment. The suspect was arrested and taken to jail.

Saturday, Aug. 17 – Fraud impersonation, 3500 block of Stratfield Drive. Police responded to several reports of a vehicle pulling up to mailboxes and a male reaching in and attempting to steal mail. The vehicle is a black Nissan sedan with black rims and a loud exhaust system. The victims all had RING cameras that caught the vehicle on camera.

Saturday, Aug. 17 – Marijuana possession, Osborne Road & Windsor Parkway. Police saw a large amount of smoke coming from a vehicle at the above location. Thinking the vehicle was on fire, they approached, but instead were greeted by a strong odor of marijuana. The driver was detained, the vehicle searched, and a large amount of packaged marijuana and a scale were located. The subject was taken to DeKalb jail.
