Getting Naked in Your Garden This Weekend?

Just asking, because this Saturday, May 7, is World Naked Gardening Day. And its been going on for 10 years.

Yes, there is indeed an event called World Naked Gardening Day. And Saturday, May 7, is actually its 10th anniversary.

World Naked Gardening Day is traditionally celebrated the first Saturday in May. “Gardening naked is not only a simple joy," says the organization's website. "It reminds us — even if only for those few sunkissed minutes—that we can be honest with who we are as humans and as part of this planet.”

The event has its origins in Seattle. It's founder, Mark Storey, says the day is a family friendly event.

So why garden naked? "First of all, it's fun," Storey said. "Second only to swimming, gardening is at the top of the list of family-friendly activities people are most ready to consider doing nude. Moreover, our culture needs to move toward a healthy sense of both body acceptance and our relation to the natural environment."

Storey says its OK to wear a hat, gloves and/or shoes. You need to be practical about these things, after all.

So, for those inclined to shed their clothes and commune with nature in a garden, what should you do besides stripping down? The organization recommends finding some friends or family, and garden together outside or inside. "Stay private or go public," it said. "Make it a quiet time or make it a public splash. Just get naked and make your part of the botanical world a healthier and more attractive place."

Afterward, tell someone about your experience. Write down what you thought of it and email it to your local newspaper; post your thoughts and images onto an Internet site; submit stories and photos to your club newsletter.
