Scammers Calling Brookhaven Residents Pretending To Be Police

The scammers are using former officer's names and threatening people with warrants and fines.

BROOKHAVEN, GA — Police have had reports of scammers calling Brookhaven residents and claiming to be police. The callers are using former officer’s names and threatening the victim with the existence of warrants, over due fines and court fees. Police also said the scammers are cloning the department's phone numbers so that the number appearing on the victim's caller ID is the number for police headquarters.

The scammers, police said, are demanding payment in the form of gift cards.

"The Brookhaven Police Department does not call individuals by phone attempting to collect fines or fees, nor do we enlist the help of outside entities to do so," police said in a statement. "Brookhaven police do not except fines or fees in the form of gift cards."
