BROOKHAVEN, GA — Brookhaven police arrested a man in connection with the stabbing of a pregnant woman at Peachtree Creek Greenway last weekend.

A woman and her 3-year-old son were walking along the greenway Saturday around 5:30 p.m. when a man approached the woman and began talking with her, police said. After she walked away, he stabbed her in the back multiple times in front of her son — and she was five months pregnant.

The suspect — 30-year-old Christopher Jones —was arrested Thursday morning at the MARTA Arts Center station after law enforcement officers searched for him for three days.

Jones has a "documented history" with BPD, said Lt. David Snively, public information officer for the Brookhaven Police Department, at a news conference Thursday, but declined to provide further information. Jones appears to be homeless, Snively said, and investigators "believe mental illness played a role in this case."

Snively also said Jones admitted to the stabbing.

The unnamed female victim had to have an emergency C-section following the stabbing, Patch previously reported. The newborn is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and is expected to be there for several months, while the mom is expected to survive but remain in the hospital for several days.

Jones is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and cruelty to children in the first degree. All three charges are felonies. He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail, where he remains without bond.

Snively said increased police presence and patrols will continue at the greenway to help residents and greenway visitors feel safer.
