Suspect Named In Killing Of Trans Woman: Brookhaven Police

BROOKHAVEN, GA — The Brookhaven Police Department named a suspect in the early May killing of Sophie Arrieta Vasquez, a trans woman, and officers need the public's help finding him.

BPD officers obtained arrest warrants charging Pedro Silva-Renteria, 18, of Norcross, with murder in the killing of Vasquez, who was found dead in the doorway of her Brookhaven apartment May 4 with gunshot wounds. Officers obtained the warrant May 11, according to a Tuesday news release from BPD, and have been working to find Silva-Renteria but have yet to locate him.

Police said Vasquez's death is not being investigated as a hate crime at this point in the investigation. This status could change based on further evidence and investigation, BPD spokesperson Lt. David Snively previously told Patch.

Silva-Renteria is described as a Hispanic male, 5' 10" tall and approximately 180 pounds, according to BPD. While he lives in Norcross, Silva-Renteria was traveling on foot in the Clairmont Road area of Brookhaven at the time of Vasquez's death, police said, and he is not known to have a car.
