In 2020, the CDC released an estimate that 1 in 54, or 1.85 percent of children have autism in the U.S. For diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a child must display symptoms in two core areas: social communication and social interaction, and restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. ASD is further diagnosed as ASD level 1, level 2, or level 3. They indicate how much support an autistic person needs, with level 1 meaning relatively little support and level 3 indicating a great deal of support. However, each patient’s need for support is highly individualized. Research suggests that autism develops from a combination of genetic and environmental influences. Lots of ASD kids have GI conditions, such as food allergies. Early intervention between ages 0 to age 6 can make a significant difference in improving cognitive and social development.
