Decatur Mulls Ways To Beautify Howard Avenue

Decatur is considering several options to make Howard Avenue more appealing and safe.

DECATUR, GA -- Decatur is exploring ideas to beautify and improve West Howard Avenue, the city said this week. The city is reimagining the thoroughfare as a place for bike parking, lush greenery and safe pedestrian walkways to and from the MARTA rail station.

Crosswalk art, a mural and bridge/overpass art are all being considered for the roadway. The pros to many of the ideas include the high visibility that can come from the public art projects. The pros include permissions needed from MARTA and maintenance associated with the works.

The city aims to do the project using "low-cost, semi-permanent materials," the city said in documents from the June 1 public information meeting. Three chalkboards were placed along the streets for residents to add ideas. People were prompted to vote for their three favorite ideas for Howard Avenue.
