Decatur School Gets Safer Cross Walk
A school in Decatur applied for and received a grant to have a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon device installed at its cross walk.
DECATUR, GA — Westchester Elementary School in Decatur has a new “pedestrian hybrid beacon” at its crosswalk thanks to a grant. The Georgia Department of Transportation installed the device last week.
The city received a $79,000 grant for the device. Pedestrians can stop traffic by now pushing a button that activates overhead lights. Drivers must stop when the double red light flashes.
The school is located on Scott Boulevard near Clairemont Road.

“Safety is the top priority for Georgia DOT, and pedestrians are among our most vulnerable road users,” said District Engineer Kathy Zahul in a prepared statement. “We are using hybrid beacons more frequently to provide safer crossings at more frequent intervals. It is extremely important that drivers and pedestrians understand how they operate and how to use them properly.”
